Hosted by Northwestern Polytechnical University, the 9th International Conference on Brain Inspired Cognitive Systems (BICS 2018) was successfully held in Xi’an during July 7th-8th 2018, as a sequel of BICS 2004-2016. It was co-organized by University of Strathclyde, UK; University of Stirling, UK; IEEE Brain Initiative, USA and Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University, China. BICS 2018 aims to provide a high-level international forum for scientists, engineers, and educators to present the state of the art of brain inspired cognitive systems research and applications in diverse fields. In conjunction with BICS 2018, an IEEE BDB Competition sponsored by the IEEE Brain Initiative was also held for the first time in China following the success of BDB Challenges in Boston, USA, December 9, 2017.

The opening ceremony of BICS 2018 was held on July 7th and actively attended by 103 experts and scholars from America, Britain, Australia, India, Spain, etc.

Prof Yanning Zhang, the Assistant to the President of NPU and the co-chair welcomed all the guests from home and abroad on behalf of the host. She then made a brief introduction of NPU’s achievements in recent years and expressed her wish that all the participants present can share their thoughts and work freely on the related front-edge subjects through this opportunity.

Prof Jiangbin Zheng, Vice Dean of School of Software and Microelectronics, NPU and the co-chair, introduced the preparation work that had been done for the event. He expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the support and hard work of the co-organizers, volunteers and the staff.

As one of the most important conferences in Brain Science area, during the conference, 4 keynotes, 40 selected oral presentations and more than 50 posters haven been given and shared covering the four topics: neural computation; biologically inspired systems; image recognition: detection, tracking and classification; data analysis and natural language processing and applications.

BICS 2018 conference proceedings will be published as part of Springer LNAI Series and indexed by EI. It’s now available with 83 papers selected and published in 9th International Conference, BICS 2018, Xi’an, China, July 7-8, 2018, Proceedings, Advances in Brain Inspired Cognitive Systems. (See
